Cape Town is one of the world's great running cities. Mountains, ocean, forest, vineyards and a tight-knit community of runners and clubs all live within an hour of the City Bowl. Here are the seven routes worth building your week around — plus how to pair each with the right coach on MojaFit.

1. Sea Point Promenade (3–11 km, flat)

The 11 km out-and-back from Mouille Point to Bantry Bay is the city's spiritual home for casual runners. Flat, ocean breeze, water fountains and zero excuses. Best at 06:00 or 17:30.

2. Green Point parkrun (5 km, Saturdays 08:00)

Free, timed, every Saturday at the Green Point Urban Park. Excellent for building 5K progression — most beginners go from "couldn't do 5K" to sub-30 in a 12-week build with the right plan. A running coach can sit inside that build.

3. Constantia Greenbelt (varies, gentle hills)

Trails, vineyards and shade. Pick up the Greenbelt 1 from Spaanschemat River Road for an easy 8 km loop. Better surface for shin splints and plantar issues.

4. Table Mountain Contour Path (10 km, technical)

Tabletop mountain views all the way. Mix of single-track and gravel. Don't run alone — rather meet a trail group or hire a guided coach. Pair this with a strength block to keep your knees happy.

5. Platteklip Gorge (3 km, brutal vertical)

For mental conditioning and trail-leg strength. 700m of vertical in 3 km. Walk-run it the first time. After 6 weeks of consistent hill work you'll run more of it than you think.

6. Lagoon Beach to Blouberg (12 km, flat coastal)

Long, flat, exposed to wind — perfect for a steady aerobic build. Postcard views of Table Mountain across the bay.

7. Tygerberg Hills (5–15 km, rolling)

Northern suburbs runner staple. Great for tempo and threshold work without the City Bowl traffic.

Building a week around these routes

Most non-pro runners do well with: 1 long run (Constantia or Lagoon Beach on a Saturday), 1 interval session (Sea Point or a track), 1 easy run (Promenade), and 2 strength sessions. A MojaFit running coach will programme this for your goal race and tweak based on how each week actually went.

Cape Town running events worth aiming at

  • Two Oceans Half (21.1 km, Easter)
  • Sanlam Cape Town Marathon (October)
  • Spar Women's 10k (March)
  • Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra (56 km, for the brave)
